The cornerstone of indoor pool water management is the daily addition of fresh water to compensate for losses from filtration backwashing, evaporation, and splash-out, while simultaneously diluting accumulated contaminants. According to China's Code for Design of Water Supply and Drainage for Swimming Pools, indoor swimming pools are required to add fresh water daily amounting to 5% to 10% of the total pool volume. This continuous dilution helps maintain dissolved solids, chlorides, and other by-products within acceptable limits without the need for frequent complete draining.
Alongside daily dilution, the pool water must be continuously circulated through filtration and disinfection systems. The same code stipulates that public swimming pools should achieve a full water turnover every 6 to 8 hours—meaning the entire pool volume passes through the filtration system three to four times per day. This circulation, combined with daily fresh water addition, ensures that contaminants are constantly removed and diluted.
Complete Drainage: Periodic Deep Renewal
While daily dilution and continuous circulation maintain water quality over the short term, dissolved solids, stabilisers, and other non-filterable substances gradually accumulate. Complete drainage and refilling become necessary when these levels exceed treatable limits.
There is no universally mandated interval for complete water replacement. In practice, the frequency varies widely based on usage and maintenance quality. For public indoor pools with high bather loads, complete drainage may occur every 1 to 2 months during peak seasons. Well‑maintained facilities with robust filtration and diligent chemical management can extend this interval to 3 to 6 months. Some private or low‑use indoor pools may even operate for 3 to 5 years before a complete water change is required, provided chemical balance is rigorously maintained.
Regulatory Framework and Practical Considerations
It is important to note that Chinese regulations do not prescribe a fixed, nationwide interval for complete pool draining. The Code for Design of Water Supply and Drainage for Swimming Pools specifies that the schedule for emptying and refilling pool water shall be determined according to the requirements of the local health supervision authorities. This delegated approach allows flexibility based on local water quality, climate, and usage patterns.
In practice, pool operators rely on continuous monitoring of key parameters—including free chlorine residual (maintained at 0.3–0.5 mg/L), pH, turbidity, and total dissolved solids—to determine when complete replacement is necessary. When chemical adjustments can no longer keep these parameters within acceptable ranges despite proper filtration and disinfection, a complete drain and refill is indicated.
