    Total phosphorus is a critical parameter in water quality assessment, particularly for monitoring eutrophication. In the feed manufacturing industry, wastewater is generated from raw material cleaning, equipment rinsing, floor washing, and boiler blowdown. 

    This effluent contains residual phosphorus from feed ingredients. Without proper monitoring and treatment, such discharges contribute to phosphorus loading in receiving waters, accelerating eutrophication. 

    At the same time, phosphorus is an essential nutrient for animal bone development and neurological function, making its content a key quality indicator in feed products. The benchtop total phosphorus analyzer provides accurate, efficient, and standardised measurements, delivering significant value in both wastewater compliance and product quality control.

    Sources of Phosphorus in Feed Industry Wastewater

    Phosphorus in feed processing wastewater originates from two main sources. First, raw material losses—grains, fishmeal, and meat and bone meal all contain organic and inorganic phosphorus. During grinding, mixing, and pelletising, a portion of these materials enters the wastewater as dust or residues. 

    Second, phosphorus additives—such as monocalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate—are used to meet animal nutritional requirements. These additives inevitably find their way into wastewater during production, conveying, and equipment cleaning.

    For feed manufacturers, wastewater discharge must comply with the Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB 8978-1996), which sets limits on total phosphorus. At the same time, finished feed products must meet the phosphorus content specified in GB/T 6437-2018. 

    These dual compliance requirements make total phosphorus testing an essential component of both environmental management and quality assurance in feed production.

    The benchtop total phosphorus analyzer is designed in accordance with the national standard method (GB 11893-1989). The analytical process begins with digestion, where the sample is heated with potassium persulfate to convert all forms of phosphorus—including inorganic phosphates and organic phosphorus compounds—into orthophosphate. In an acidic medium, the orthophosphate reacts with ammonium molybdate to form phosphomolybdic acid, which is then reduced by ascorbic acid in the presence of antimony to produce a blue-coloured complex.
