  • Three Key Applications of Spectroscopic Organic Matter Analyzers

    Time:June 13, 2026

Spectroscopic organic matter analyzers, typically based on UV‑Vis absorption, measure organic pollutants in water by detecting absorbance at specific wavelengths (e.g., 254 nm for UV₂₅₄). They require no reagents, respond in real time, and enable continuous online monitoring.

These features have made them indispensable in three major scenarios: surface water and drinking water source monitoring, wastewater treatment plant process control, and industrial effluent management.

    1. Surface Water and Drinking Water Source Monitoring

In rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, these analyzers provide continuous data on dissolved organic matter (DOM) levels. Rapid increases in UV₂₅₄ can signal pollution events—such as illegal discharges or agricultural runoff—allowing authorities to respond immediately.

For drinking water utilities, real‑time monitoring of raw water organic content helps optimize coagulant dosing and reduce disinfection by‑product formation, ensuring safe tap water.

    2. Wastewater Treatment Plant Process Control

At wastewater treatment plants, spectroscopic analyzers are installed at influent, bioreactor, and effluent points. Influent readings give early warning of organic load shocks, enabling operators to adjust aeration and sludge recirculation. In the biological tank, continuous monitoring tracks degradation efficiency; if UV₂₅₄ remains high, the operator can increase air supply or nutrient addition. Effluent monitoring ensures that discharge permits (e.g., COD limits) are consistently met without the delay of conventional lab analysis.

    3. Industrial Wastewater and Process Control

Industries such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, and textiles generate wastewater with highly variable organic content. Spectroscopic analyzers provide real‑time feedback for treatment units (e.g., equalization, biological treatment, advanced oxidation).

In addition, they are used for in‑process quality control—for example, monitoring organic intermediates in pharmaceutical reactors or ensuring rinse water purity in food production. This real‑time capability reduces waste, saves energy, and prevents off‑spec products.
