    Cyanide detection in water typically relies on colorimetric methods (e.g., isonicotinic acid‑pyrazolone or pyridine‑barbituric acid) or ion‑selective electrodes. These methods require reagents that are often toxic, sensitive to light and heat, and prone to degradation. 

    Proper storage is essential not only for accurate results but also for operator safety. This article outlines key principles for preserving cyanide detection reagents.

    Categorised Storage

    Cyanide standard solutions (e.g., KCN or NaCN) are extremely toxic. They must be kept in a locked, dedicated poison cabinet under double‑person control. Use amber glass bottles sealed with Parafilm and store at 2–8 °C (refrigerator, never freezer). Working standards should be prepared fresh or recalibrated weekly. 

    Colour reagents such as isonicotinic acid, pyrazolone, and pyridine should be kept in cool, dry places away from direct sunlight. Pyridine is malodorous and irritating – open it only in a fume hood. Buffer solutions and masking agents (e.g., phosphate buffer, EDTA) are more stable but may support microbial growth; adding a preservative like chloroform or sodium azide and marking the preparation date is good practice.

    Environmental Control

    Temperature, humidity, and light are three critical factors. Hygroscopic reagents (e.g., isonicotinic acid) must be stored in a desiccator with relative humidity below 60 %. All prepared solutions should be kept in amber bottles or wrapped in foil to prevent photochemical degradation. 

    A dedicated reagent cabinet equipped with a thermo‑hygrometer is recommended; air conditioning or a dehumidifier should be used when necessary. Never store cyanide reagents near acids, as contact will release deadly hydrogen cyanide gas. Keep them away from acid bottles, chlorine dioxide generators, and any acidic source. A clear warning sign must be posted.

    Expiry Management

    Dry, unopened reagents can last 2–3 years under proper conditions. A concentrated cyanide stock solution (e.g., 1000 mg/L) stored in the refrigerator remains stable for about six months, but diluted working solutions (<1 mg/L) should be used within 24 hours. Prepared colour reagent mixtures (e.g., isonicotinic acid‑pyrazolone solution) are stable for roughly one week at 4 °C; discard immediately if colour darkens or precipitate appears. 

    Buffer solutions are good for about one month at room temperature. Always label each bottle with name, concentration, preparation date, expiry date, and the technician’s initials. Any reagent that shows turbidity, colour change, crystals, or exceeds its expiry date must be discarded as hazardous waste – never used.

    Safety and Waste Disposal

    All operations involving cyanide reagents must be performed in a fume hood. Operators must wear nitrile gloves, safety goggles, and a lab coat. Contaminated consumables (pipette tips, vials) should be soaked in sodium hypochlorite solution to detoxify cyanide before rinsing and disposal. 

    Never pour cyanide solutions down the sink. Collect residual standards in a dedicated waste container, adjust to pH >12 with NaOH, add excess hypochlorite or permanganate to oxidise cyanide, and confirm destruction before release. Colour waste containing pyridine or other organics must be collected as organic hazardous waste and handled by authorised contractors.
