The chlorophyll-a automatic analyzer is a critical instrument for monitoring eutrophication and assessing ecological conditions in natural waters. Its sensor, which is continuously submerged in the water body, inevitably suffers from biofouling, optical window degradation, and electronic drift over time.
When routine cleaning and calibration fail to restore measurement accuracy, sensor replacement becomes necessary. A standardized replacement procedure ensures data integrity and prolongs the instrument’s service life.
Pre‑replacement Assessment
Before initiating the replacement, three preparatory steps are essential. First, confirm that the new sensor matches the existing model exactly in terms of mechanical interface, electrical pinout, and operating voltage. Second, gather the required tools—screwdrivers, wrenches, insulated gloves—and verify they are clean and functional. Third, inspect the new sensor for any visible damage, scratches, or contamination on the optical surface.
The decision to replace should be based on objective criteria: persistent measurement deviation after repeated cleaning, irreversible scratches or delamination of the optical window, sluggish response time, or baseline drift beyond the manufacturer’s tolerance, as well as expiry of the recommended service life. If the sealing O‑ring shows hardening or cracking, replacement is also mandatory to prevent water ingress.
Removal of the Old Sensor
The replacement operation must be performed with the instrument completely powered off. Disconnect all electrical connections between the sensor and the main unit, including power and data cables, to eliminate the risk of electric shock and to protect the new sensor from potential surge damage.
Carefully retrieve the sensor from its mounting position. Loosen the fixing screws or clamps using the appropriate tools, taking care not to strain or pull the cables. It is advisable to document the wiring arrangement—by taking a photograph or making a sketch—before disconnecting the old unit, as this will simplify reconnection of the new one. After removal, clean the mounting area thoroughly to remove any residual debris, scale, or biological growth, ensuring a flat and clean surface for installation.
Installation of the New Sensor
Install the new sensor by following the reverse order of removal. Refer to the recorded wiring diagram and connect the signal and power lines correctly, paying close attention to polarity and ground connections to avoid damaging the electronics.
Once the electrical connections are secure, place the sensor into its mounting bracket and fasten it with screws or clamps. Ensure that the sensor is firmly fixed and free from vibration or movement. The sealing step is critical: install a new O‑ring or gasket as specified, and apply appropriate waterproof sealing to prevent moisture from penetrating the housing. Finally, verify that the sensor is properly positioned to make full contact with the water sample and that it does not interfere with other components.
After installation, do not put the sensor into service immediately. Power on the instrument and observe whether the sensor initialises without error codes or abnormal warnings.
