Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) is a key parameter for assessing organic pollution in water. Traditional BOD testing requires laborious preparation of nutrient buffers, seed microorganisms, and dilution water – steps prone to errors and inconsistency.
Preformed BOD reagents are ready-to-use, standardized chemical mixtures designed to simplify this process. Typically supplied in sealed ampoules, capsules, or tablets, they contain all necessary components: phosphate buffer, magnesium sulfate, calcium chloride, ferric chloride, and a glucose–glutamic acid standard (for check solutions).
Advantages
Consistency: Manufactured under strict quality control, minimizing batch-to-batch variation.
Convenience: No weighing or dissolving of individual chemicals; just add the pre-measured reagent to the sample.
Time-saving: Reduces preparation from ~1 hour to minutes.
Lower contamination risk: Sealed units avoid airborne or cross contamination.
How to use
Add the preformed reagent to a BOD bottle containing the water sample.
Add seed (if required) and fill with dilution water.
Measure initial dissolved oxygen (DO), incubate 5 days at 20°C, then measure final DO.
Calculate BOD using the standard formula.
Preformed reagents are widely adopted in routine environmental monitoring, wastewater treatment, and regulatory compliance, offering a reliable, efficient alternative to traditional manual preparation.
