    Hospital wastewater carries a complex mixture of pathogens, drug residues, organic matter, and nitrogen‑phosphorus compounds. Untreated or improperly treated effluent poses serious risks to public health and the environment. Stringent discharge standards (e.g., GB 18466‑2005 in China) set strict limits on parameters such as COD, ammonia‑nitrogen, residual chlorine, pH, turbidity, and suspended solids. 

    Traditional manual sampling and laboratory analysis are too slow and intermittent to support real‑time process control. The multi‑parameter water quality analyzer – which integrates several sensors into one online instrument – has become an indispensable tool for efficient, reliable hospital wastewater treatment.

    Integrated Monitoring for Real‑Time Control

    A multi‑parameter analyzer simultaneously measures key indicators: pH, COD, ammonia‑nitrogen, residual chlorine, turbidity, and suspended solids. For example, COD and ammonia‑nitrogen sensors (often using UV‑Vis or ion‑selective electrode technology) track organic and nutrient loads continuously, allowing operators to adjust aeration or carbon dosing instantly. Turbidity and suspended solids data reflect the efficiency of sedimentation and filtration steps. By replacing discrete lab tests with a continuous data stream, the instrument provides immediate feedback on treatment performance – a critical advantage for meeting strict discharge permits.

    Ensuring Effective Disinfection

    Residual chlorine is the most critical parameter for disinfection in hospital wastewater. Too little chlorine fails to inactivate pathogens; too much produces harmful disinfection by‑products and may violate discharge limits. An online residual chlorine sensor, integrated into the multi‑parameter analyzer, measures chlorine levels 24/7. 

    The data can be linked to a dosing pump, creating a closed‑loop control system that automatically adjusts chlorine addition. This ensures that the effluent stays within the required range (e.g., 2–8 mg/L for general hospitals), significantly reducing the risk of under‑disinfection or over‑chlorination.

    Compliance and Data Traceability

    Modern multi‑parameter analyzers are equipped with data logging and remote transmission capabilities (4G, RS485, etc.). They can upload real‑time readings directly to environmental supervision platforms, fulfilling regulatory requirements for continuous monitoring. When any parameter exceeds the alarm threshold, the system can trigger an automatic sampler to preserve the suspect sample for laboratory verification. This creates a complete, audit‑trail of compliance, helping hospitals demonstrate responsible wastewater management.
