    Monitoring total oil content in wastewater is a mandatory requirement for numerous industrial sectors, as oil and grease are regulated pollutants that can impair aquatic ecosystems, block sewer systems, and interfere with biological treatment processes. The following five categories represent the primary industries that routinely conduct total oil determination in their effluents.

    1. Petroleum Extraction and Petrochemical Processing

    This sector includes crude oil drilling, refining, and petrochemical manufacturing. Production waters, refinery waste streams, and process condensates contain substantial concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons. Regulatory standards impose strict discharge limits for oil and grease, making frequent testing essential for compliance and for assessing the performance of oil‑water separation units.

    2. Machinery Manufacturing and Metalworking

    Metal cutting, grinding, stamping, and quenching operations rely heavily on cutting fluids, lubricants, and cooling agents. These processes generate emulsified oily wastewaters that are chemically stable and difficult to treat. Routine oil content analysis is necessary to evaluate emulsion breakdown efficiency and to prevent excessive organic loading on downstream treatment facilities.

    3. Food Service and Food Processing

    Commercial kitchens, restaurants, and food‑processing plants—especially those involved in frying, oil extraction, and meat preparation—discharge wastewaters rich in animal and vegetable fats. Elevated grease levels cause pipe blockages and odor problems, and they adversely affect aerobic biological units in municipal plants. Regular monitoring of animal and vegetable oil concentrations is therefore mandated under environmental protection regulations.

    4. Shipping, Port Operations, and Shipbuilding

    Vessels generate oily bilge water, ballast water, and engine cooling effluents. Shipyards and repair docks also produce oil‑contaminated runoff. Strict international and national discharge criteria apply to these sources, and total oil determination—often using infrared or gravimetric methods—is critical for verifying compliance and preventing marine pollution from accidental spills.

    5. Iron and Steel Smelting, and Power Generation

    In steel mills, coking and rolling processes release wastewater containing lubricating oils and tars. Thermal power plants, particularly those using heavy fuel oil, may experience oil leaks from transformers or turbine systems. These intermittent but high‑risk discharges require continuous or periodic oil monitoring to detect equipment faults early and to safeguard cooling water systems.
