Chlorine dioxide test reagents are sensitive to light, heat, moisture, and air oxidation. Proper long-term storage is therefore essential for maintaining their reliability and extending their useful life.
The first priority is temperature control. Most solid DPD reagents remain stable between 15°C and 25°C, while liquid reagents often require refrigeration at 4°C to 8°C. Avoiding temperature fluctuations is just as important as staying within the recommended range. A dedicated storage area equipped with air conditioning and dehumidification helps maintain relative humidity below 60 percent.
Light and moisture protection go hand in hand. Reagents should be kept in amber glass or opaque high-density polyethylene containers with tight-fitting seals. Potassium iodide crystals, for instance, absorb moisture readily and release free iodine upon light exposure, so they belong in a brown desiccator with a desiccant. After opening a container, close it immediately to minimize contact with air and contaminants.
Separation of incompatible chemicals is another fundamental rule. Oxidizing agents and reducing agents should be stored apart to prevent accidental reactions. Every container should carry a clear label indicating its name, concentration, preparation date, expiry date, and specific storage conditions.
Expiry dates deserve a nuanced approach. Reagents past their stated shelf life may still work, but their performance should be verified weekly against a standard solution with a concentration near the upper limit of the test range. If accuracy holds across the range, the reagent remains usable. For parameters without a suitable standard, however, expired reagents should not be employed.
Finally, prepared solutions require special attention. Iodine and starch indicator solutions are best made fresh; if stored briefly, they should be kept refrigerated and never frozen. Sodium thiosulfate solutions degrade over time and should be restandardized before use, with solutions older than one month discarded.
By following these practices—controlled temperature, darkness, dryness, segregation, clear labeling, and periodic verification—chlorine dioxide test reagents can be stored for extended periods without compromising analytical results.
