    Water transparency is a fundamental physical parameter in aquaculture. It measures the depth to which light penetrates the water column, typically using a Secchi disc. Transparency reflects the abundance of suspended particles, phytoplankton, and organic matter. 

    It serves as a practical indicator of water fertility, natural food availability, and oxygen conditions. Maintaining appropriate transparency is essential for promoting fish growth, optimising feed utilisation, and preventing disease outbreaks.

    General Recommended Range

    For most aquaculture systems, the recommended transparency range is 25 to 40 centimetres. This range is widely considered the safe zone that balances phytoplankton productivity and dissolved oxygen supply. Within this range, the water contains a moderate density of algae. 

    Photosynthesis produces sufficient oxygen to support the cultured animals, while the algae also serve as a natural food source for filter‑feeding species. Some sources give a narrower optimum of 25 to 30 centimetres for pond fish farming, while others accept 25 to 40 centimetres for pollution‑free aquaculture. For so‑called “fertile” water, which is desirable for many species, transparency typically stays between 20 and 30 centimetres.

    Species‑Specific and Seasonal Variations

    Different cultured species have different transparency preferences. For filter‑feeding fish such as silver carp and bighead carp, transparency between 25 and 40 centimetres indicates an adequate supply of planktonic food. In early spring, when water temperatures are low, a slightly lower transparency of 30 to 35 centimetres is preferred because it allows more solar radiation to warm the water, encouraging early feeding. During winter, when water quality should be clear, transparency may be allowed to increase to 40 to 50 centimetres.

    For shrimp farming, the ideal transparency varies with the growth stage. In the early phase, a range of 20 to 30 centimetres is beneficial for establishing natural food organisms. In the middle and late phases, transparency should be increased to 30 to 40 centimetres to maintain stable water quality and reduce stress on the shrimp.

    Consequences of Deviations

    When transparency falls below 20 centimetres, the water is overly fertile, often due to excessive algal blooms. Dense algal growth restricts light penetration, suppressing photosynthesis in deeper layers. Algal respiration and decay consume large amounts of dissolved oxygen, particularly at night, leading to bottom hypoxia. Fish under such conditions show reduced feed digestion and weakened disease resistance. A transparency around 20 centimetres with a dark, blackish colour indicates deteriorating water quality and often signals the presence of cyanobacterial blooms.

    Conversely, when transparency exceeds 40 centimetres, the water is too lean. Phytoplankton populations are sparse, and oxygen production through photosynthesis is insufficient. Natural food organisms are scarce, causing slow growth and poor feed conversion. Some farmers mistakenly believe that clearer water is always better, ignoring the crucial role of algae in supplying oxygen.
