What Are Hard and Soft Water?
Water hardness is defined as the total concentration of calcium and magnesium ions, usually expressed as milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate equivalent. According to classification scales, water with less than 75 mg/L is considered very soft, 75–150 mg/L is soft, 150–300 mg/L is moderately hard, 300–450 mg/L is hard, and above 450 mg/L is very hard. In many countries, drinking water standards set an upper limit—for example, China's GB 5749-2022 specifies a maximum of 450 mg/L.
Effects of Hard and Soft Water
Soft water contains fewer calcium and magnesium ions. It feels smoother, produces less scale, and reduces detergent usage. However, it may lack beneficial minerals. Some studies suggest that people living in soft‑water areas have slightly higher cardiovascular mortality, possibly linked to lower magnesium intake. Hard water, on the other hand, provides essential minerals that support bone and heart health.
But it has downsides: heating hard water precipitates calcium carbonate—the familiar white scale—which coats pipes, reduces boiler efficiency, and increases energy costs. Very hard water may also cause temporary digestive discomfort.
How a Portable Hardness Tester Works
Traditional hardness testing uses EDTA titration, which is time‑consuming and subjective in endpoint judgement. Portable hardness testers use either ion‑selective electrodes or colorimetric methods. The electrode‑based model employs a combination electrode with a PVC membrane sensitive to both calcium and magnesium ions. When immersed in water, the electrode generates a potential proportional to the total hardness.
The built‑in microprocessor converts this signal into a hardness reading, with automatic temperature compensation and data storage. Colorimetric testers use a reagent that changes colour in proportion to hardness; the instrument measures the colour intensity and calculates the result. Both methods deliver results in minutes, with accuracy comparable to standard laboratory methods.
Practical Applications
For households, the tester reveals whether tap water, well water, or bottled water is suitable for drinking or requires a softener. In industrial settings, boiler feed water must meet strict hardness limits to prevent scaling and ensure safety.
